Overview - During this week the class will focus on building a career oriented resume. They are expected to turn in an example of a resume on Tuesday for a homework assignment. We will then use technology to build a basic resume format. Throughout the week we will break down the sections of a resume and discuss how to build one from the ground up. Students will work in groups. I will post updates of each day's lesson as they occur.
Monday 9/9/13 - Today we did not hold an actual lesson in Writing. The STEM team held Monday Meeting. During that time we introduced the Morning Buzz, which is our student news broadcast. We also had our guest speakers Mr. Miller and Mrs. Russell come in and discuss the Code of Conduct. Students will be creating character trait charts in collaborative groups this afternoon. We will publish these charts and use them in the STEM program.
Tuesday 9/10/13 - Today the students will be working out of the computer lab. We will be using an internet resource called Resume Builder. Students will plug in information about themselves such as their educational background, employment, achievements, and goals. They will then print out their copies and sit with other students to revise and make any improvements. This will be the second piece of the puzzle in drafting their final career ready resume in a week. Remember that the first piece of the resume puzzle was to have a borrowed resume or internet resume turned in for reference. Many of the students did not complete this first assignment. As a result, they received a "0" according to our Zero Tolerance Policy. Please make sure that all homework is completed and returned when assigned. Thank you.
Wednesday 9/11/13 - This is our first day in the classroom working on our resumes. The students have been hard at work collecting, formatting, and building resumes. Thank you to those who assisted their children with the resume process and for going the extra mile. We are now taking the first two pieces of the resume puzzle and using them as a template for constructing a student created, career oriented resume. They will be working in collaborative groups. There will be an independent grade given and a group grade as well. Please remember that we are instructing your children using 21st century learning skills. I introduced a resume template and rubric for each group to follow, as well as posted a professional resume for them to follow. The deadline for a rough draft resume will be next Monday. We will then conference on the resume and the student will have two more days to create a final copy.
Thursday 9/12/13 - Resume work continues!! The students worked in collaborative groups in a brainstorming session. Their goal was to create four informative charts that the class could use to strengthen their resumes. The four charts were titled: Employment, Skills, Activities, and Achievements. Each group had 4 minutes to create six topics for each chart. At the end of that time the charts were moved onto the next group. The next group would offer reflection on the work completed and the process would start all over to allow for everyone to add ideas to all four charts. Many ideas were added and now the students feel more confident as we move forward with the resume process. They have a working idea wall to borrow from.
Friday 9/13/13 - Happy Friday the 13th!!! The class objective today was to pound out the paper draft section of the resume and transition to Microsoft Word 13. Students works in their collaborative groups providing essential feedback to each other as they sailed through the resume waters. We used the brainstorming charts created from yesterday's lesson and group activities to reinforce our resumes. At the end of each class students were expected to discuss an overall group collaboration grade. This grade was based upon cooperation, production, efficiency and overall cohesiveness. I was very impressed to find that the students were extremely reflective and conservative with their grading choices. The STEM program really seems to be working effectively with the Common Core initiative.
