Overview - The 6th Grade is currently in "Shutdown" mode as we prepare for the Greek Fest on November 21st. In Mr. Barkley's Journalism Shop, the students are broken into groups of broadcasters, interviewers, researchers, reporters, writers, bloggers and editors. Each day, their assignments change in order to guarantee versatility in the journalism field. By Tuesday of this week, we should be able to produce a newspaper, news broadcast and blog page. In order for that to happen, our journalists and researchers must hit the hallways in search of the latest, greatest news stories.
Monday - 11/4/13 - We were unable to hit the ground running due to many technology issues, and with our Monday Meeting going over its allotted time. In the afternoon, we will be able to finally get out into the classrooms and interview/collect information.
Tuesday - 11/5/13 - This morning our news room had a very special guest stop by. You could at the very least say that the kids were overly excited to work beside Micaela Bedell. Ms. Bedell took time from her busy schedule to stop in and share her plethora of knowledge with our young journalists. The students learned how to ask the key questions when reporting: who, what, when, where, why, and how. She was able to change the way that students created their articles, by adding style and journalistic features, for the Greek Daily Times. The journalists were able to receive first hand, professional training from a media specialist. We hope to have our first paper published and out to the public today. Check out our Greek Blog under my blog page.
Wednesday - 11/6/13 - Wow!! The journalists set up the news room, handed out assignments, set their goals, and out they went. Super impressed. The objective for the day is to cut down on the production time for the Greek Daily Times. Students will meet back after lunch to assess the results and to track their progress toward their goal. They hope to produce a paper by 12:30 and have the remainder of the day to focus on the Olympus Evening News Broadcast. We are still experiencing technical difficulties getting a software program to work. The students have their materials ready, but unfortunately, technology trumps preparedness. Hopefully, all of the glitches will be remedied before the project ends.
Thursday - 11/7/13 - Our first Olympus Evening News was a hit with the kids!!! They are really strengthening their delivery skills and have sharpened their news coverage. We are right back at it today getting ready to publish the third edition of the Greek Daily Times. Keera is busily plugging away at her fan-favorite Blog edition. She has learned how to infuse her opinion into an informational piece, and we see her improvements each and every day. Delanie and Ethan have been pounding the streets in search of the next, best interview. Our journalists are in competition for the front page story. It truly is amazing to see students working together to produce real, usable products. Our objective is improve our journalism each and every day to provide the greatest coverage for our community. Please, take a look at our work on Mr. Barkley's ELA page.
