Weekly Objectives for 12/2/13 - 12/6/13

Overview - The crime scene investigators are back in action as we delve into yet another case.  The focus of the teams over the next two weeks looks into the murder of a prominent racketeer by the name of Fannin.  Police heard the shouts ring out at "Ernie's Lunchroom" Thursday afternoon and rushed to the scene.  The investigators will use their previous knowledge of text based/observable evidence, strong warrant skills and claims based research to crack open the case.  The deadline for their police report and re-enactment scene will be Friday, December 13th.  Along the way the investigators must: work collaboratively in groups of (4) to build a case against one or more suspects, discover a minimum of 20 pieces of evidence with warrants and claims, arrive at an overall judgement, draft a rough copy of the police report, revise and edit the report, finalize an official report, and finally offer a video recorded re-enactment of the actual crime scene.  Follow along, if you wish, as CSI Salmon River gets down to the "nitty-gritty" at Ernies Lunchroom.
Monday - 12/2/13 -  Today we reviewed evidence based writing practices and how warrants/claims apply to the process. The class then modeled to each other how evidence must be supported with warrants.  We attempted to reverse the process of making a claim first, and soon realized that it was a much more difficult task than expected.  The class also made sure that each team did not speculate on who committed the crime.  In other words, do not choose a suspect before the evidence collection begins.  Clear your minds and wipe away any bias you may have.  Collect the evidence with an open mind and then formulate those ideas into a strong judgement.  Follow the evidence and it will put you on the correct lead.  The investigators then created their own graphic organizers to collect the evidence.  The crime scene report was handed out and we were able to go over the happenings the Ernie's Lunchroom.  They just began to collect evidence when the bell rang.
Tuesday - 12/3/13 - The CSI groups are off and running. Currently they are collecting text-based and observable evidence. They are using the close-reading approach to breakdown the meaning of the witness report.  All words are being deciphered for meaning and purpose. The crime scene picture is being broken down into quadrants and studied with a fine-tooth comb.  They must collect, at the minimum, 20 pieces of evidence supported with warrants.  Some groups have decided to actually begin to act out the scene.  Stay tuned for more details.
Wednesday - 12/4/13 - The investigators continue to explore all of the evidence as they begin to formulate an idea of who committed the crime.  They are realizing that all evidence is important and that each fits into the puzzle in one way or the other.  The case is not as cut and dry as the first.  The teams are running into dead ends with their speculations.  How will it turn out for them in the end.  Will they be able to recreate the scene and crack the case, or will Fannin's murderer go free to travel our streets?
Thursday - 12/5/13 - Last day to collect vital evidence in the Bannin Case.  Investigators must find evidence that leads to the arrest of a suspect.  They must also find evidence that clears the other patrons that were in the diner today. As they sort through this information, some are beginning to realize that not everything is as it seems.  Could there be more than one killer or possibly an accomplice?  Was the owner being honest with in his witness statement?  Why was no one in the diner when the police ran in?  The case is full up twists and turns.  Will it come out in the wash?  Tomorrow the students will be taking a break from the crime scene and will turn in the direction of letter writing.  They must thank our Greek presenter who provide our STEM with a wonderful presentation on Ancient Greece.
