Weekly Objectives for the Week of 9/16-9/20

Overview-The plan for this week in writing class is to produce a finalized digital resume .  Each day is vitally important in class as we will be drafting, conferencing, and finalizing our work.  We need to make sure that we stay focused on our deadline and meet it.  After all, we are the STEM team and deadlines are part of what we do.

Monday 9/16 - Today we did not hold a writing class as we are still working out the Monday Meeting procedures for the students.  Our day focused on modeling the Morning Buzz, Shout-Outs, Greetings, and group activities.  Mrs. Russell was our guest speaker and she delivered a very heart felt speech to the students about what it takes to become a principal.  Our focus on the STEM is to open your child's eyes to the opportunities available to them.  Our speakers are showing them that it is possible to achieve your dreams and they are laying out the groundwork for them.  We look forward to next week's speaker.

Tuesday 9/17 - The students diligently worked their way toward teacher conferences today.  Most are on the Office 2013 creating digital drafts.  Once the draft is printed off then the teacher conference begins.  As a partnership, we walk through the common core rubric for informational pieces.  A discussion occurs between teacher and student about the strengths and weaknesses of the resume.  From that discussion an overall draft grade is mutually agreed upon.  We are all in different stages of the process but the deadline is the most important aspect of this lesson.  DEADLINE - FRIDAY as in this Friday!!!  Good luck!!!

Wednesday 9/18 - We are in the student/teacher conference mode.  Basically, the room shuts down and we pound out conferences.  Many are now in the final copy stage where they are able to create a usable resume for a career field of their choice.

Thursday 9/19 - Today is the last day for conferencing.  Students are scrambling to get their conference in with Mr. Barkley or Mrs. Chapman.  They have a deadline to meet and that is tomorrow.  A final copy must be turned in at that time along with all previous pieces of work.  Hard work is not even a fair description of how they are going about their business right now.  The overall lesson for my students is to learn to meet a deadline in an efficient manner, and that not all people make that deadline due to mismanagement of time or poor organizational/preparation skills.  Good luck to all in reaching their goal.

Friday 9/20/13 - DEADLINE DAY!!!  Wow!!  What a crazy day.  I was very impressed with the way most students pulled it off.  These students displayed self-discipline, responsibility, perseverance, and strong organizational skills.  They were given a deadline to meet and by golly almost all of them did it.  As usual, you have the batch of students who we call early birds.  Then there is the group that grinds it out each day.  After that group comes the last-minute performers.  I was very proud of all of these different types of learners.  Unfortunately, some students did not meet the deadline.  They understood the grading policy and know what it means to deliver on time after having seen that there is not an extension.  Overall, the resume experience turned out wonderfully for all involved.  Students leaned to collaborate, manage time, balance quantity versus quality, take charge, be assertive, implement technology......... the list goes on and on.  Great first project.
