Overview - The News Room will continue their coverage of the Greek Fest Project. The room is broken down into reporters, broadcasters, bloggers, interviewers, researchers and editors. Each section is vitally important to the other. They must work collaboratively to produce results. Each day, the journalists must produce The Greek Daily Times, Keera's Blog, The Olympus Evening News, reflections, and plan their agenda for tomorrow. Please, make sure you check out our site to read and view these wonderfully produced pieces of work. The Common Core Standards are being covered from every angle, along with the 21st Century skills that are vital for entering the career field. We look forward to seeing everyone at the Greek Fest on November 21st in the Middle School Gym.
Tuesday - 11/12/13 - The journalists were once again given a shorter deadline to produce results. We were stuck in a STEM meeting for 60 minutes, and we had to get out quickly to collect information. I am sure that the journalists will meet their deadline. This morning at their meeting they discussed ways to effectively shave time off of the production of the show, paper and blog. We will continue to work toward our overall goal of covering the Greek Fest in every journalistic way possible.
Wednesday - 11/13/13 - Today we had a special guest come and visit, Mrs. Russell. The journalists delivered the morning agenda as usual and then set off to work. Each student had either an interview or a story to capture and write. They are starting to meet some resistance from the other classrooms as they dig deep for the latest breaking news. As journalists, they must deliver the "ups and downs" that are happening in our community. The intent is not to hurt or embarrass, but to deliver the truth all the time. I am very proud of this group for getting down to the details and reporting it to the entire school community. Kudos to them!!!
Thursday - 11/14/13 - Mr. Bonesteel will be visiting our Greek Fest project today. We are expecting many great questions and our journalists will be ready to cover the story. The journalists have learned many valuable skills throughout this process: interviewing, evidence based writing, claim writing, persuasive writing, strong speaking skills, oral intonation and delivery skills, organizational skills, social interaction skills, collaboration, short and long term planning, and the list goes on. Each day the newspaper, blog and broadcast improve and grow in length. We are now publishing 16 papers daily and delivering them to all areas of the school. Our news broadcast is now on the main STEM page. The Greek Blog is getting a ton of visits by curious web browsers. We will conclude our news coverage tomorrow, and begin to plan for the Greek Fest presentation on Monday.
Friday - 11/15/13 - Sadly, today is our final day of production. It was a short, but exciting run for the News Room, filled with challenges and obstacles throughout the process. In the end they were able to produce amazing results each and every day. The improvement could be seen by the number of visitors to our website. Each broadcast brought more and more viewers. The journalists realized that delivering the news isn't always about success and happiness, but sometimes about failure and disappointment. All along the way, they acquired career building skills that will be useful in their future endeavors. Some students even discovered that journalism is their field of choice and plan on pursuing their dreams into college. That is what STEM education can provide for our children. Enjoy the final newspaper, broadcast and blog.
