Weekly Objectives for 4/7/14 - 4/10/14

Overview - The NYS ELA Exams are now officially over!!!!  One more test to go and then the STEM team returns to project based learning.  In writing this week, students will be receive instruction on how to properly answer mathematical questions using short responses.  The students have focused on evidence based writing for the better part of the year, so this should be a natural transition.  They must be able to explain how they solved the mathematical problem using key words and phrases.
Monday - 4/7/14 - Today we started lesson #1 in the NYS modules.  Students were introduced to positive and negative integers.  We used three different scales to elaborate the ideas.  We looked at temperature, bank accounts and sea level.  They were exposed to real world problems embedded in the problems, and were expected to use reason to explain their answers.
Tuesday - 4/8/14 - The students learned about reference points in relation to objects below, at, and above sea level.  We reviewed positive and negative integers from the day before.  The groups built vertical scales in order to address the real world problems thrown at them.  They were expected to solve the questions and elaborate using short responses that had key words embedded within them.
Wednesday - 4/9/14 - We focused on opposite numbers today in relation to a line graph.  Students were thrown real-world problems to solve using banking, temperature, and distance scenarios.  Many of these problems involved complex, descriptive explanations.
