Weekly Objectives for 9/15/14 - 9/19/14

Overview - The classes will focus on completing their professional resumes for the remainder of this week.  The groups are using Microsoft office's resume template system to complete the task.  These resumes will be an assessment grade, as well as a useful tool when applying for a job during the Greek Festival project.  Students are growing more comforatble with independence and are really starting to show their problem solving strengths.  A big push this year in the STEM program is to get them collaborating with each other and solving issues at a peer level, rather than expecting the teacher to solve all of their problems.  It will take time, but the results will be well worth the wait.  PLEASE REMEMBER TO HAVE YOUR VETERAN SELECTED AND WRITTEN DOWN ON A PIECE OF PAPER NO LATER THAN WEDNESDAY.  WE WILL BE STARTING THAT UNIT NEXT MONDAY!!!!!

Monday - 9/15/14 -
Today in Writing we worked on our professional resumes.  Students used their rough drafts that they created last week as a resource in the completion of the process.  We all met in the computer lab and began the process.  The students were allowed to choose their own template and use various font sizes to create their piece of work.  They will be given two class periods to finish the assignment.  They may work on these at home if desired.  We are using Microsoft Word's resume templates.  Remember to have permission from your veteran by this Wednesday.  I need to see their name on a sheet of paper.

Tuesday - 9/16/14 -
Today I have the opposite classes in the computer lab.  We are covering the same lessons taught yesterday.  Please make sure that your child has a "jump drive" as soon as possible.  We will constantly be moving around rooms and using various computers.  Resumes for this group are due on Thursday.  They also must have a veteran's name turned in by tomorrow.

Wednesday - 9/17/14 -
Today was the final day to complete resumes.  The students were given until 2:30 to hand in their work.  All papers needed to be turned in before dismissal. Students that have not turned in their veteran permission sheets today, are now late, and will lose points from their grade.

Thursday - 9/18/14 -
Today was the final day to turn in the professional resumes for the second round of classes.  You have until 2:30 to get all necessary papers turned in.  Don't forget to have you r veteran permission slips filled out by Friday.

Friday - 9/19/14 -
In class, we began the Veteran Unit by showing two different videos about our military from two differing perspectives.  The first video was created by a third grade class that decided to write and sing a song honoring those that served.  It was inspiring to the our students due to the fact that children actually wrote and sang their own lyrics.  The second video was honoring the Native America servicemen who fought for our freedoms.  The song was powerful and brought goosebumps to your skin.  What a great way to lead into a unit?!?!
Following the videos, we began to work collaboratively on what a veteran actually was. We discussed the branches of the military, along with their special designations within each branch.  We began to take notes on how to properly interview someone in a professional setting.  The students were really receptive and we practiced by modeling the interview process with each other.  Barbara Walters would be jealous.  Stay tuned in next week for more information.
