Weekly Objectives for 10/20/14 - 10/23/14

Overview- We will have a very busy, but short week.  There will be much going on in all areas of STEM.  At our Monday Morning Meeting we have wonderful group activities planned for you.  We will also be discussing the upcoming Greek Fest, and introducing the careers available to you.  Students will be informed of those positions.
In Writing, we will wrap up "The Hero's Journey" on Tuesday.  On Wednesday, the students will be taking a writing assessment.  The paper will be a comparison of Percy Jackson and their own hero.  They will be required to answer in paragraph format.  I will be looking for strong thematic statements supported by warranted evidence.  On Thursday, we will be interviewing for positions in one of the career fields that you chose.  Friday, well you know all about Friday, enjoy your long weekend.

Monday - 10/20/14 -
Monday Morning Meeting was a huge success today.  The students were brought into the gym for collaborative group activities.  The first activity consisted of students getting to know each other through common connections.  One student would tell a great story about themselves, and then the next would take a theme from that story and tell one of their own.  Students had a blast learning about others and how close they really are to each other.
The second activity was based off the popular hit game show, "Amazing Race."  Students were kept in the same groups and given the first of four envelopes.  They had to crack the secret codes within each envelope and answer content related questions from the first five weeks of school.  Some questions were in Greek, while others were in Morse Code.
After the group activities, we returned to the LGI room to review what skills the students learned from working in groups.  The feedback was outstanding.  The students began to understand how powerful a group is when their minds are put together for the common good of the team.  They now understand that you don't have to get along to accomplish tasks, but that you just have to be able to compromise and work together.
Finally, we introduced the Greek Festival highlights to the group.  We explained what lay ahead for our young students, and the high expectations that are being set before them.  Each teacher introduced the career field that they would be facilitating.  We made sure to cover every career that is available to our students: News Room, Engineering, Cuisine, Arts, Olympics(Sports History), Medicine/Science, Business, Fashion Design, Agriculture, and many more...   Students are expected to use their resumes to apply for these positions, then sit down for an in depth interview.  Good luck to all hopeful candidates.  MAKE SURE TO UPDATE YOUR RESUMES!!!!

Tuesday - 10/21/14 -
Today is the final day for completing their "Hero's Journey" charts.  Student will be wrapping up the final section of the journey.  The final phase focuses on the return home from the new world.  The hero learns how to adjust to their new surroundings, and handles situations differently now that they have a better understanding of who they are.  The deadline for submitting their forms is 3:15 today.  There will be no late work turned in.  Tomorrow will be their writing assessment on the comparison of Percy Jackson to their chosen hero.  The paper will consist of three major questions that focus on the differences and similarities between them.  As always, I will be looking for warranted eveidence that helps support their claims.
